Sockets come in different sizes for different bolts, but did you know each socket has a drive size. The most common being 1/4″, 3/8″ 1/2″. There are 3/4″ and 1″ drives as well but those are more for industrial usage. You can check out a socket size chart here.
How are socket drive sizes measured?
Socket drive sizes are measured by the distance in the drive hole. The image below shows that a 1/2″ drive socket would then require a 1/2″ drive ratchet.

Socket drive sizes
Sockets come in many sizes to remove and install bolts but there is a standard size for the drive side of the socket. Smaller sockets typically use smaller drive sizes like a 1/4″ drive for example. The bigger the socket, the bigger the drive size will be eventually. Below are the three most common sizes and pictures to illustrate their differences.

Extensions
Sometimes when you need to reach a bolt but it’s too far an extension is needed. Like sockets, they also have a standard size for attaching to ratchets and sockets. Below are the three most common sizes and pictures to illustrate their differences.

Ratchet drive sizes
A ratchet is a tool used with sockets and extensions. This is the hand tool that drives the socket in the direction you spin the ratchet. Like a socket and extension, it also comes in standard sizes. Below are the three most common sizes and pictures to illustrate their differences.
